Daisy Steiner from Spaced was an instant hit with me. I very much identified with the slightly hopeless woman, as portrayed by Jessica Hynes. She wasn’t perfect, and it’s so rare to see a woman on TV that’s not “perfect” I thought this was the greatest female ever in popular culture.

Rather strangely, it’s ended up that I’m a journalist (who works) and my partner is a graphic designer (not a comic one though). 

I was in college (in Tasmania, that means year 11 in high school) in 1999. I was extremely awkward and didn’t feel I fitted in anywhere with anyone, so A TV show that was about people who don’t fit in, fitting in together, really appealed.

Let’s all hit Limp Bizkit one more time

Britney Spears’ …Baby One More Time was released in 1999. How horrible. In other horrible music news, Limp Bizkit (spew) released Nookie. Dumbest song by one of the dumbest bands.

Placebo came out with Every You, Every Me, which I didn’t mind at the time, but not much good came out that I was aware of.

War comes to town

1999 was the start of the Kosovo War. This became a biggish deal in Tasmania because the Australian Government agreed to take a number of refugees from that war and a bunch of them were sent to Tasmania. Most of the refugees left Tasmania once the war was over, but it as a very big deal at the time because it was such a big group from the one spot who came to such a tiny state.

Not much else of importance happened in 1999. We were all just waiting for the millennium bug to kill us all on New Year’s Day.
